The 19th annual Bat Fest took place on Saturday, September 6, 2025, turning the Congress Avenue Bridge into a giant outdoor festival with live music, food and drink vendors, arts and crafts, a kids’ area, bat-themed activities and, of course, the famous bat emergence.

It’s basically Austin saying:

“We have 1.5 million bats under a bridge. Let’s throw a party.”

And honestly, that’s exactly what you should expect.

THIS IS NOT JUST A BAT-WATCHING EVENT

If you’ve never been to Bat Fest, don’t make the mistake of thinking you’re simply going to stand around waiting for bats.

It’s a full festival.

The 2025 event featured multiple stages of live music, food and drinks, vendors, a kids’ zone and the bat viewing itself. The event ran from approximately 3 p.m. until 11 p.m.

So you can make an entire Saturday out of it.

Come early.

Listen to music.

Eat.

Drink.

Walk around the vendors.

Take pictures.

Watch the bats.

Then stay for the rest of the music.

THE BEST PART IS THAT THE BATS ARE REAL

This isn’t some gimmick where somebody puts a bat mascot on stage.

There really are bats underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge.

And when they emerge, thousands upon thousands can stream out from underneath the bridge in a giant moving column.

The Austin Bat Refuge identifies late July through mid-September as one of the best times of year to see the Congress Avenue Bridge bats, making September a particularly good month for bat watching.

So don’t get frustrated if you don’t see bats at exactly 7:42 p.m.

Here’s how I would do it.

Get there in the afternoon.

Walk around the festival.

Listen to some music.

Eat something.

Grab a drink.

Then start positioning yourself for the bats before sunset.

Don’t wait until the last minute.

Everybody else will have the same idea.

YOU HAVE OPTIONS FOR WATCHING THE BATS

One of the best things about Austin’s bat colony is that you don’t have to pay for a festival ticket to see the bats.

You can watch the emergence from public areas around the Congress Avenue Bridge.

The Austin Bat Refuge identifies several viewing options, including the top of the bridge and areas underneath it on both the north and south sides of Lady Bird Lake.

THE SOUTH SIDE IS A GREAT VIEW

The south-shore viewing area near the bridge is one of the popular spots for watching the emergence.

It’s also a good option if you don’t want to stand directly on the bridge.

You’re essentially standing right above the bats.

Then go out afterward.

You get the Austin experience without paying festival admission.

THE PAID VERSION

If you want live music, food vendors and the entire festival atmosphere, buy the Bat Fest ticket.

For 2025, advance general admission was listed at $25, with gate admission listed at $35 including fees, while VIP packages were considerably more.

That makes general admission a relatively inexpensive way to spend an entire Saturday afternoon and evening.

If you’ve never been to Bat Fest, this is another reason not to assume the event is strictly a country or Americana festival.

The Texas rockers were another highlight of the 2025 lineup.

Their sound fits nicely into an Austin festival because it’s energetic, loud and built for a live crowd.

Silversun Pickups brought the alternative-rock side.

Having a band like this on the same lineup as Waka Flocka Flame and RiFF RAFF tells you everything you need to know about Bat Fest.

It doesn’t really care about genres.

Then you have Waka Flocka Flame.

Because apparently Austin decided bats and hip-hop belonged together.

And somehow it works.

THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULDN’T ARRIVE LATE

If you arrive right before the bats, you may miss several hours of music.

If you want to make a full evening out of it, South Congress is right there.

Watch the bats.

Walk toward South Congress.

Downtown is also an easy choice.

After Bat Fest, you can head toward Sixth Street, Rainey Street or other downtown nightlife areas.
